Cast Iron Plant 10”

Aspidistra elatior, commonly called cast iron plant, is a hardy plant native to Japan and Taiwan known for its long, deep green, strap-like leaves that grow upright from the soil. What makes this plant special is its durability—it tolerates low light, irregular care, and fluctuating conditions better than most houseplants while still maintaining a clean, structured look.

Light is flexible but still influences growth. Place it in a north or east-facing window where it gets gentle, indirect light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the top of the plant. In very low light, growth slows significantly and new leaves come in smaller. In brighter light, it will produce stronger, taller foliage, but direct sun can scorch the leaves.

Watering should be conservative and steady. Allow the soil to dry out most of the way between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark for airflow. This plant prefers to stay on the drier side—if overwatered, it will show slow yellowing from the base rather than sudden collapse. If leaves develop brown tips while remaining firm, it’s often from mineral buildup or inconsistent watering rather than needing more water.
