Calathea White Star 4”

Calathea ‘White Star’, is a tropical prayer plant known for its long, elegant leaves covered in fine white and pale pink pinstripes against deep green foliage, often with rich purple undersides. What makes this plant special is how the pattern changes as each leaf matures. New growth can show stronger pink tones that gradually soften toward white, creating layers of color throughout the plant.

Light supports strong patterning, compact growth, and healthy new leaves. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it receives consistent filtered light without prolonged direct sun hitting the foliage. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. Too little light can produce smaller leaves, slower growth, and less distinct patterning, while excessive direct sun can fade or scorch the foliage.

Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings without letting the root zone become completely dry. Water thoroughly and let the excess drain away, using a well-aerated mix of 1/3 succulent soil, 1/3 coarse orchid bark, and 1/3 grade 3–4 perlite. White Star appreciates moderate to higher humidity, warm temperatures, and good airflow. Calatheas can also be sensitive to mineral buildup, so filtered, distilled, or rainwater can be helpful if your tap water is particularly hard.

Watch the leaves for its clearest signals. Leaves folding upward in the evening and reopening with the light is normal prayer-plant movement. Leaves remaining tightly curled during the day with a dry root zone can signal that it needs water, while yellowing or soft stems with wet soil point toward excess moisture. Crispy brown tips can develop from inconsistent watering, dry air, or mineral buildup. Faded patterning, smaller new leaves, or stretched petioles usually indicate that the plant needs stronger light.
