Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

The Calathea pilosa, botanically Goeppertia pilosa, is a tropical understory plant known for its soft, velvety foliage covered in fine hairs, giving it a muted, matte appearance compared to glossy calatheas. Native to Central and South America, it grows in shaded, humid environments where airflow is gentle and consistent. The leaves are elongated with subtle patterning and often carry a softer green tone with a lighter underside. The value is in the texture, this plant looks and feels different from typical smooth-leaf calatheas.

Light requirements start with direction. Place it in a north or east-facing window for soft, indirect light. It can handle a west window if pulled back 3–5 feet, but avoid direct sun which can scorch the delicate, textured leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 12–18 inches from the canopy. This is a low to medium-light plant, and too much intensity will cause stress faster than low light.

Watering and environment must stay stable. Keep the soil lightly moist, allowing only the top layer to dry slightly before watering again. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Do not let it fully dry out and do not let it sit in water. Leaves curling or crisping mean it’s too dry or humidity is low, yellowing can point to overwatering, and dull, thinning leaves can indicate inconsistent care or low humidity. Keep humidity moderate to higher, temperatures warm, and airflow gentle.
