Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Notocactus elegans (often grouped under Parodia elegans), native to South America, is a small, globular cactus known for its rounded body with pronounced ribs lined with fine spines and soft yellow to golden tones. What makes this plant special is its symmetrical, almost geometric shape paired with its ability to produce bright yellow flowers that contrast against the structured body, giving it a clean, classic cactus look.

Light drives how compact and symmetrical the cactus stays. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong, direct light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the cactus will elongate and lose its round shape, becoming stretched rather than tight and ribbed. Strong light keeps it dense, evenly formed, and well-colored.

Watering should be minimal and precise. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This cactus shows stress through its structure—if it begins to stretch upward, it’s a light issue. If the base softens or turns discolored, the roots are staying too wet. Slight wrinkling while staying firm indicates it’s ready for water, not declining.
