Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Stetsonia coryne, commonly called toothpick cactus, is a large columnar cactus native to South America known for its tall, upright growth and long, sharp spines that emerge from pronounced ribs. What makes this plant special is its bold, architectural form—thick columns that can grow very tall with striking, needle-like spines that give it a strong, sculptural presence.

Light drives how thick and stable the columns grow. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong, direct light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the columns will thin and stretch, losing strength and becoming more prone to leaning. Strong light keeps the growth dense, upright, and well-defined.

Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This cactus shows issues through its structure—if the base becomes soft or discolored, the roots are staying too wet. If growth becomes thin or uneven, it’s reacting to light, not water. Slight wrinkling while the plant remains firm indicates it’s ready for water, not stressed.
