Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Pellaea rotundifolia, commonly called Button Fern, is a compact fern grown for its small round leaflets and tidy arching growth habit. Native to New Zealand, it grows in rocky forest environments with filtered light and steady airflow. What makes this plant special is the deep green, leathery “button-like” leaflets arranged along thin dark stems, giving it a softer and more structured appearance than many delicate ferns. The foliage stays compact and dense, making it well suited for shelves and smaller spaces.

Light requirements
Place Button Fern in an east or north window for the best balance of growth and leaf quality, positioned at the window or within 1 to 3 feet depending on intensity. A south or west window can work if pulled back from direct sun exposure. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and keep the light 12 to 18 inches above the canopy. It performs best around 100 to 300 foot-candles. Too much direct light can scorch and dry the foliage.

Watering & environment
Keep the soil lightly moist, allowing only the top portion to dry slightly between waterings. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Unlike thinner ferns, the slightly leathery foliage allows it to tolerate short dry periods better, but it still does not like fully drying out. It prefers moderate humidity, steady airflow, and stable temperatures.

What your plant is telling you
If leaflets become crispy or begin dropping, it is drying out too much. If stems yellow or the crown softens, the soil is staying too wet. If growth becomes thin and stretched, it needs more consistent light.
