Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Phlebodium aureum, commonly called Blue Star Fern, is a tropical epiphytic fern grown for its uniquely shaped, blue-green fronds. Native to the Americas, it grows on trees and organic matter in warm, humid environments. What makes this plant special is the soft, wavy fronds with a matte blue tone and irregular lobing, along with its fuzzy, creeping rhizomes that sit on top of the soil. The foliage has a slightly thick, leathery feel compared to most ferns, giving it a more durable, sculptural look.

Light requirements
Place Blue Star Fern in an east or north window for the best balance, positioned at the window or within 1 to 3 feet depending on intensity. A south or west window can work if pulled back to avoid direct sun hitting the fronds. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and keep the light 12 to 18 inches above the canopy. It performs best around 100 to 300 foot-candles. Too much direct light will scorch the fronds, while too little light will slow growth.

Watering & environment
Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, never fully dry and never saturated. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Do not bury the rhizomes, keep them at or above the soil surface. This plant prefers moderate to higher humidity, steady airflow, and stable temperatures.

What your plant is telling you
If fronds become crispy or dry, it needs more consistent moisture or humidity. If fronds yellow or the base softens, the soil is staying too wet. If growth slows or fronds become thin and sparse, it needs more consistent light.
