Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Microsorum thailandicum, commonly called blue oil fern, is a rare fern native to Southeast Asia known for its narrow, upright fronds with a deep blue, almost iridescent sheen. What makes this plant special is that metallic blue coloration—it reflects light in a way that gives it a subtle oil-slick effect, making it one of the most unique foliage ferns in a collection.

Light needs to be controlled to preserve that blue tone. Place it in a north or east-facing window where it gets gentle, consistent light without direct sun hitting the fronds. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the top of the plant. In stronger light, the blue sheen can fade and appear more green. In lower light, growth slows but the color remains deeper and more saturated.

Watering and environment need to stay consistent with higher humidity. Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep airflow while holding moisture. This plant reacts through its fronds—if they lose that blue sheen and look flat green, it’s getting too much light. If tips brown while the frond stays firm, it’s a humidity issue. If the base softens or fronds collapse, the roots are staying too wet rather than drying out.
