Asplenium nidus, commonly called bird’s nest fern, is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific known for its wide, strap-like leaves that grow in an upright rosette from a central “nest.” The foliage is smooth, bright green, and slightly wavy, creating a clean, structured look while still feeling soft and full. It grows from the center outward, forming a symmetrical, bowl-like shape.
Light should be bright but gentle to protect the soft leaves. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it receives steady light without direct sun hitting the foliage. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can scorch and crisp the leaves, while too little light will slow growth and cause the plant to lose its full, upright form.
Watering and environment need to stay consistent. Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to maintain airflow while holding moisture. Avoid watering directly into the center of the plant. If leaves begin to pale or grow thinner, it is not getting enough light. If the edges crisp while the leaf stays green, it often points to low humidity rather than watering issues. Blackening at the base usually indicates excess moisture sitting in the crown or roots rather than underwatering.
