Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.
Ruby Slippers Begonia
Huge leaves saturated in ruby pink, deep red and burgundy make Ruby Slippers one of those Begonias that barely looks real when the color develops. A dark, almost black center spreads outward along the veins, while areas of metallic silver and rosy pink can move through the leaf as it expands and hardens. Even leaves on the same plant can show different balances of ruby, silver and burgundy, giving an established plant layers of color across the entire crown.
This is a rhizomatous, mounding Begonia rather than a cane Begonia. New leaves rise from growing points along the rhizome and gradually build a broad, dense crown. The foliage can become surprisingly large, with mature plants reaching roughly 16 inches tall and spreading around 16 to 20 inches wide. It does not climb and does not need a support. Give the plant enough room around the crown for those large leaves to open without being trapped against shelving or neighboring plants.
For natural light indoors, place it 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 2–4 feet from a west-facing window. Aim for approximately 400–800 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Ruby Slippers naturally changes quite a bit as its leaves develop, so a newly opening leaf may look very different from one that has already hardened. Good usable light supports substantial foliage and compact growth. If successive leaves begin getting smaller, petioles become increasingly long or the plant starts reaching strongly toward its light source, give it more usable light.
Under a grow light, use a full-spectrum 5000–6500K fixture approximately 10–14 inches above the canopy, aiming for 400–800 foot-candles at the leaves. Keep the fixture centered over the entire crown rather than concentrating the strongest light over one side of the plant. As Ruby Slippers widens, make sure the developing leaves around the rhizome remain inside the useful coverage of the fixture.
Water when your plant needs watered. Allow it to use a good portion of the available moisture before watering thoroughly again, but avoid repeatedly taking the fine root system to an extreme dry while the plant is actively growing. Give it a loose mix that can hold some moisture while still allowing plenty of air around the roots and rhizome. Potting soil or coco coir combined with coarse perlite or pumice and some fine to medium orchid bark works well. Keep the rhizome close to the surface rather than burying it deeply, and give those large leaves good airflow as the crown becomes fuller.
Pay attention to which leaf is changing and what the newest growth is doing. An older outside leaf declining while the center is actively producing a large, healthy leaf can simply be part of the plant moving forward. If several successive leaves become smaller, petioles weaken or new growth repeatedly struggles, look at usable light, moisture consistency and the roots together. If the pot stays wet for a long time while the plant is declining, check what is happening around the roots and rhizome. Leaf edges can also show stress before the entire plant is struggling, so use them as a reason to look at the environment rather than trying to diagnose the plant from one imperfect edge.
Success looks like an expanding crown with a healthy rhizome, active growth points and new leaves maintaining or increasing their size. The amount of ruby, pink, burgundy and silver can shift from leaf to leaf and as individual leaves harden. That changing color is part of what makes Ruby Slippers so much fun to grow. Keep your attention on what the plant is building. Large new foliage, sturdy petioles and steady growth from the rhizome tell you far more than whether every leaf develops exactly the same color pattern.
