Begonia 'T. Rex' is a specialty rex begonia known for its exceptionally large leaves, dramatic texture, and bold coloration. While standard rex begonias are grown primarily for their colorful foliage, 'T. Rex' was selected for oversized leaves, stronger growth, and a more commanding presence. Depending on the cultivar, the foliage may display combinations of silver, burgundy, green, black, pink, or purple with swirling patterns and heavily textured surfaces. These plants are grown as foliage specimens and often become a focal point in a collection due to their size and visual impact.
For the best growth, place Begonia 'T. Rex' in an east-facing window or several feet back from a south- or west-facing window. They perform best between 500 and 1,500 foot-candles. Under grow lights, use a 5000K–6500K full-spectrum fixture positioned 10–14 inches above the canopy. Excessive direct sun can bleach or burn the foliage, while insufficient light can reduce color intensity and cause stretched growth. Consistent lighting helps maintain the vibrant patterns that make rex begonias desirable.
Allow the soil to become lightly dry before watering again, but do not allow the plant to remain bone dry for extended periods. Rex begonias prefer evenly moist, airy soil with excellent drainage and benefit from good airflow around the foliage. Watering directly into the crown repeatedly can increase the risk of rot. Leaves that become limp despite moist soil often indicate root problems, while crispy edges can signal low humidity, inconsistent watering, or excessive light exposure.
What separates a 'T. Rex' Begonia from a typical rex begonia is primarily its size and vigor. Standard rex begonias usually produce leaves in the 4–8 inch range and maintain a relatively compact growth habit. 'T. Rex' varieties can develop leaves exceeding 10–12 inches across under ideal conditions and often grow faster with a more robust root system. They tend to tolerate average household conditions better than many traditional rex begonias, making them somewhat easier for beginners. The larger foliage creates a much bolder display, allowing the plant to function almost like a tropical statement piece rather than a small tabletop accent.
