Begonia rex ‘Spirit of Madagascar’ (Rex Begonia ‘Spirit of Madagascar’)
Native to Northeast India and Southeast Asia, with this cultivar bred for dramatic foliage in warm, humid, forest-floor conditions with filtered light
Highly collectible for its bold contrast and swirling pattern, this rex begonia stands out for its deep, moody tones paired with metallic highlights. It’s grown purely for foliage and visual impact, not flowers
Leaves are asymmetrical and textured with a spiral growth pattern. Color ranges from deep burgundy to near-black with silver or muted green patterning and a soft sheen. Edges are slightly ruffled with a velvety surface

Light requirements
Prefers east and north windows
Place directly at the window or within 1–2 ft. Can sit 3–5 ft back in bright, indirect light
Under grow lights use 5000K–6500K
Distance from canopy:
12–18 inches for controlled growth
10–14 inches for fuller, more compact growth
Foot-candles: 300–800 for stable color and leaf integrity. Above 1,200 fc can wash color and stress foliage

Watering & environment
Keep soil lightly moist but never saturated. Do not allow it to fully dry out or stay consistently wet
Always check the root zone. Rex begonias have fine, shallow roots that rot quickly if overwatered
Requires higher humidity (50–70%) with good airflow. Avoid water sitting on leaves. Keep temperatures stable above 65°F

What your plant is telling you
Needs water: leaves lose firmness, edges begin to crisp slightly, and the plant may droop at the base
Too wet: mushy stems at the base, rapid leaf collapse, or translucent patches forming on leaves
Light issues: faded color, loss of contrast, and stretched growth indicate not enough light. Bleached patches or crispy edges signal too much direct light
