Begonia ‘Iron Cross’ originates from the forests of China, where it grows in shaded, humid understories with soft, diffused light filtering through the canopy. In its native environment, the plant develops its distinctive textured leaves and the dark cross-shaped markings at the center of each leaf. These natural lighting conditions help guide how it should be cared for indoors.

As a houseplant, Begonia ‘Iron Cross’ thrives in bright, indirect light, especially near an east- or north-facing window, where the light is gentle and consistent. Direct sun—particularly harsh afternoon rays—can easily scorch its leaves or wash out the dark cross pattern. Too little light, however, can dull its colors and lead to thin, leggy growth, so providing steady brightness is important for maintaining its bold look.

To keep its foliage even and vibrant, rotate the plant every week so all sides receive equal illumination. If your home is dim, a full-spectrum grow light placed slightly above and off to the side can mimic the scattered forest light the plant prefers.
