Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Begonia ferox, native to China, is a rhizomatous begonia known for its thick, textured leaves covered in raised black spikes over a deep green surface. What makes this plant special is its armored look—the spikes harden as the leaf matures, giving it a bold, almost prehistoric appearance that stands out from softer begonias.

Light drives both leaf size and spike development. Place it in an east-facing window or a softer south exposure where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the leaves come in smaller with less pronounced texture and fewer developed spikes. Strong, even light supports larger leaves with more defined structure.

Watering should be controlled and mindful of the rhizome. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep airflow high. Avoid keeping the rhizome constantly wet. If leaves begin to soften at the base or collapse while the soil is wet, it points to rot at the rhizome. If new leaves are smaller or less textured, it’s reacting to light or environment rather than needing more water.
