Ardisia humilis, commonly known as Shoebutton Ardisia or Duck's Eye, is a tropical understory shrub native to Southeast Asia. In its natural habitat, it grows beneath taller trees where it receives filtered light, warm temperatures, and consistent moisture. Collectors are drawn to this plant for its glossy dark green foliage, clusters of delicate pink flowers, and vibrant berries that can range from red to deep purple-black as they mature. While often grown outdoors in tropical climates, it can make a unique and attractive indoor specimen when given the right conditions.

Place Ardisia humilis within 1–3 feet of an east-facing or south-facing window where it can receive bright filtered light. It appreciates more light than many common houseplants but should not be subjected to prolonged harsh afternoon sun. Under grow lights, use a full-spectrum bulb in the 5000K–6500K range. High-output lights should be positioned 8–12 inches above the foliage, while medium-strength lights work best at 10–14 inches. Adequate light encourages flowering, berry production, and dense growth.

Water when the root zone is approaching dryness, never on a schedule. Use a chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot to determine moisture levels deeper in the root ball before watering. A chunky mix of equal parts succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite provides the drainage and airflow needed to maintain healthy roots while retaining enough moisture for steady growth. Drooping leaves often indicate the plant has become too dry, while yellowing foliage may signal it is remaining wet for too long. Consistent moisture, good airflow, and bright light will reward you with glossy foliage, seasonal blooms, and colorful berries.
