Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Alocasia ‘Nairobi Nights’, commonly called Nairobi Nights Alocasia, is a tropical plant grown for its deep, moody foliage and strong contrast veining. This is a cultivated hybrid, not found in the wild. What makes this plant special is the very dark green to near-black leaves paired with lighter, defined veins and a matte to slightly velvety surface, giving it a dramatic, high-contrast look. The leaves are broad, slightly arrow-shaped, and held upright on darker stems, creating a bold, structured presence.

Light requirements
Place Alocasia ‘Nairobi Nights’ in an east or south window for the best growth, positioned at the window or within 1 to 2 feet depending on intensity. A west window can work if slightly pulled back from harsh direct sun, while a north window will slow growth and reduce leaf size. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and keep the light 8 to 12 inches above the canopy. It performs best around 300 to 800 foot-candles. Consistent light maintains its deep color and strong structure.

Watering & environment
Keep the soil lightly moist but not saturated, allowing the top portion to dry slightly between waterings. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Use a chunky, well-draining mix and avoid letting the plant sit in excess moisture. This plant prefers higher humidity, warm temperatures, and steady airflow to prevent stress.

What your plant is telling you
If leaves begin to droop or feel thinner, it is ready for water. If leaves yellow quickly or the base softens, the soil is staying too wet. If new growth is smaller or loses its deep color, it needs more consistent light.
