Alocasia Frydrek 4”

Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek’, commonly called Green Velvet Alocasia, is a compact Alocasia native in species form to the Philippines and recognized for its deep green, velvety leaves, prominent silvery-white veins, and elongated arrow-shaped foliage. New leaves emerge lighter and gradually deepen into their characteristic dark velvet green as they harden. What makes Frydek special is the dramatic contrast between the matte foliage and bright venation, which becomes increasingly pronounced as the leaves mature and increase in size.

Light supports sturdy petioles, larger leaves, and compact growth. Place Frydek near an east or south-facing window where it receives strong, consistent light, gradually acclimating it to stronger direct sun. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned approximately 10–12 inches above the canopy. Long, leaning petioles or progressively smaller new leaves are reasons to evaluate the amount of light the plant is receiving.

Allow the root zone to partially dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Use a well-aerated mix of 1/3 succulent soil, 1/3 coarse orchid bark, and 1/3 grade 3–4 perlite. Check moisture deeper in the pot with a chopstick or water meter rather than judging by the surface. Keep it warm with moderate household humidity and consistent airflow. Frydek appreciates consistent access to moisture while actively growing, but its roots still need oxygen and should not remain continuously saturated.

Watch the leaves, petioles, and root zone for its clearest signals. Firm, upright petioles and progressively larger leaves indicate favorable conditions. Drooping paired with a dry root zone signals that it may be ready for water, while yellowing foliage or softening petioles paired with wet soil point toward excess moisture. Smaller successive leaves or stretched petioles are reasons to check light and root health. An older leaf occasionally yellowing and declining as a new leaf develops can be part of the normal Alocasia growth cycle.
