Alocasia Dragon Scale Mint is a variegated form of Alocasia baginda native to Borneo. It is prized for its thick textured leaves with raised venation and mint cream marbling layered over deep green. This is a compact rhizomatous species that grows from a central base rather than vining. Because of the variegation and heavy leaf structure it requires consistent energy from proper placement to maintain strong texture and color contrast.

Water using your soak and dry rhythm checking the root zone with a chopstick or moisture meter before watering. The soil should be very well aerated using a chunky mix of quality potting base bark and perlite to protect root oxygen flow. Water thoroughly then allow the root zone to dry down before watering again. Yellowing leaves with soft stems often signal soil staying too wet while curling edges and thin texture can indicate it has dried too long. Alocasia will also drop an older leaf when pushing a new one if energy is limited which often reflects light levels.

Direction of light should be strong and consistent but not harsh. An east window within one to two feet of the glass works very well. A south window is suitable three to four feet back depending on seasonal intensity and should avoid direct afternoon sun on the foliage. If using a grow light choose five thousand to sixty five hundred Kelvin positioned twelve to sixteen inches above the plant for ten to twelve hours daily. If leaves become smaller or variegation dull increase light slightly. When positioned correctly the plant produces thick structured leaves with clear mint pattern and upright compact growth.
