Alocasia cuprea, also known as the Mirror Plant, is a jaw-dropping tropical plant with metallic, iridescent leaves that shimmer in shades of deep bronze, copper, and dark green. Native to Borneo, this rare beauty is a favorite among collectors for its unique, futuristic look. The leaves are thick, almost leathery, and reflect light in a way that makes them look like living metal.

Alocasia cuprea thrives in bright, indirect light. It doesn’t tolerate harsh direct sun, which can burn its leaves, but too little light will cause it to lose color and slow down growth. A spot near an east- or north-facing window is ideal. When it comes to watering, keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Let the top inch of soil dry out before watering again. Use a well-draining, chunky mix—think aroid mix with perlite and orchid bark to prevent root rot.

This plant loves warmth and high humidity—aim for 60% or higher humidity to keep its leaves looking their best. Consider placing it near a humidifier or in a warm bathroom with good light. Fertilize monthly during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Alocasia cuprea can be fussy, especially when adjusting to a new home, but with steady care and attention, it will reward you with bold, alien-like foliage that feels like a living sculpture.
