Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Aeonium ‘Velour’, native to the Canary Islands through hybrid lineage, is a rosette-forming succulent known for its deep burgundy to almost black foliage with a soft velvety sheen. What makes this plant special is its dramatic coloration paired with its symmetrical rosette shape—dark, layered leaves that intensify in strong light and create a bold, sculptural look.

Light directly affects both color and rosette structure. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong, direct light for several hours a day. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the deep burgundy tones fade toward green and the rosette begins to open and stretch. Strong light keeps the plant compact with richer, darker coloration.

Watering should follow the plant’s active growing cycle. Allow the soil to dry out most of the way between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. Aeoniums are winter growers and may slow down or partially go dormant in intense summer heat. If the stem or center becomes soft, the plant is staying too wet. Slight closing of the rosette during heat is normal and helps protect the center from stress.

This plant communicates clearly through its color and rosette shape. Rich, dark foliage and tight layering indicate strong light and stable growth. Leaves flattening outward or fading green signal it needs more light. Lower leaves drying and crisping naturally at the base is normal as the plant matures, but mushy leaves or a collapsing center point to excess moisture rather than thirst.
