The Philodendron melanochrysum, often nicknamed Black Gold Philodendron, is a stunning climbing aroid native to Colombia. Its name comes from the Greek words for “black” and “gold,” which perfectly describe its velvety dark-green leaves streaked with shimmering golden veins. When mature, the leaves can grow over two feet long, giving this plant a bold, dramatic look that collectors prize. Its climbing habit makes it a great choice for growing on moss poles or boards, allowing it to display its full beauty.

For care, the melanochrysum thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun will scorch its delicate, velvety leaves, while too little light will stunt growth and reduce leaf size. An east-facing window or a few feet back from a bright south-facing window is ideal. It also loves warmth and high humidity—keeping humidity above 60% helps prevent leaf crisping. Well-draining soil that stays evenly moist (but never soggy) will keep the roots healthy.

To encourage large leaves, give this philodendron something to climb and fertilize regularly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Its slower growth means patience is key, but the reward is worth it—lush, velvety leaves that look almost unreal. With the right conditions, the melanochrysum can become a true showpiece in your collection.
