Monstera ‘Bulbasaur’ is a rare Monstera cultivar prized for its unusually thick, heavily textured foliage and distinctive mature leaf shape. The leaves develop a rugged, almost reptilian surface with pronounced veining and irregular fenestrations as the plant matures. What makes this plant special is how dramatically the foliage changes with age. Juvenile growth can look relatively simple, while mature growth becomes larger, thicker, and increasingly sculptural when the plant is allowed to climb.
Light is important for developing larger leaves and mature fenestrations. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives bright, consistent light without prolonged harsh sun sitting on the foliage. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, new leaves remain smaller, spacing between nodes increases, and mature characteristics develop more slowly. Strong, even light combined with vertical support encourages larger, more heavily fenestrated foliage.
Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. Use a well-aerated mix of 1/3 succulent soil, 1/3 coarse orchid bark, and 1/3 grade 3–4 perlite. Good airflow around the root zone is important, especially as the plant becomes larger and begins using more water. Moderate to higher humidity can support clean new-leaf development, but consistently wet soil should be avoided.
Watch the newest growth for the best signals. Increasing leaf size, shorter spacing between nodes, and progressively stronger fenestration indicate that the plant has enough light and support. Smaller new leaves or long stretches of stem usually point to insufficient light or a lack of climbing support. Yellowing lower leaves while the soil remains wet can indicate root stress, while curling or softer foliage with a dry root zone signals that it is ready for water. A moss pole or sturdy plank will help this Monstera reach its mature form much faster.
