Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Nematanthus gregarius, commonly called goldfish plant, is a trailing plant native to Central and South America known for its small, glossy leaves and bright orange, pouch-shaped flowers that resemble tiny goldfish. What makes this plant special is its blooms—the flowers emerge along trailing stems and stand out against the dark green foliage, creating a high-contrast, eye-catching display.

Light drives both flowering and how full the plant stays. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without prolonged harsh sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the plant may grow but will not flower consistently. Strong, even light supports blooms and keeps the foliage dense.

Watering should be moderate and controlled. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep airflow high. This plant shows stress through its leaves—if they wrinkle or feel slightly thin, it’s ready for water. If leaves drop while still firm, it often points to inconsistent watering or environmental shifts. If stems soften at the base, the roots are staying too wet, while lack of blooms usually points to light rather than watering.
