The cat palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum) is a lush, clustering palm known for its dense, fountain-like fronds and soft, arching foliage. Native to the tropical regions of southeastern Mexico and Central America, it grows naturally along riverbanks, where humidity is high and filtered sunlight streams through the canopy. Its full, bushy form makes it a popular choice for indoor greenery, offering a tropical look without the towering height of some other palms.

Caring for a cat palm revolves around recreating its native environment. It prefers consistently moist but not soggy soil, thriving when watered regularly and never allowed to fully dry out. High humidity keeps the fronds supple and green, so occasional misting or placing the plant near a humidifier is helpful indoors. Temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C) are ideal, and the plant appreciates a balanced, diluted fertilizer during its active growing months.

Light is one of the cat palm’s most important needs. Indoors, it should receive bright, indirect light—ideally from an east- or north-facing window—where the direction of light is filtered and gentle. Direct afternoon sun, especially from south- or west-facing exposures, can scorch the fronds, while too little light may cause the plant to thin and look leggy. Positioning the palm where it receives steady, diffused illumination will help maintain its full, vibrant appearance.
