Red Prayer Plant, Maranta leuconeura var. erythroneura, is a tropical plant native to Brazil and grown for foliage that almost looks hand-painted. The oval leaves have dark green markings, a lighter green center and vivid red veins running across the surface, with purplish tones underneath. It belongs to the Marantaceae, or prayer plant family. The name comes from the way the leaves change position throughout the day and often lift upward in the evening. That movement is normal and is part of what makes Maranta such an interesting plant to grow.

Red Prayer Plant stays relatively low and spreads outward rather than developing into a tall upright plant. New leaves emerge rolled tightly before gradually unfurling, while stems can creep outward and eventually trail over the edge of the container. It does not need a pole or vertical support. As it matures, branching and new growth from around the base can create a broad, full plant rather than a single upright stem.

For natural light, start Red Prayer Plant approximately 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 1–3 feet from a north-facing window. Red Prayer Plant prefers approximately 300–700 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. It needs useful light to support healthy growth and maintain its beautiful foliage, but this is not a plant that needs the intensity we would give a succulent or high-light tree. Window direction and distance are starting points. Trees, overhangs, neighboring buildings, window size, season, screens and glass can all change how much light actually reaches the plant.

If you’re using grow lights, choose a 5000–6500K light and aim for the same approximately 300–700 foot-candles at the foliage. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, not its strength. Foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. There is no universal distance between a grow light and Red Prayer Plant because different fixtures produce very different amounts of light. Measure at the leaves and adjust the plant or fixture based on what is actually reaching the canopy.

Water when your plant needs watered. Red Prayer Plant generally does better with a more even moisture cycle than plants that prefer a substantial dryback. Let it use some of the available moisture before watering thoroughly again, but repeatedly allowing the entire root zone to become extremely dry can be hard on the foliage. Use an airy, well-draining mix that can hold some moisture without remaining heavy and saturated. Marantas can also show browned tips and edges when mineral or salt buildup becomes excessive, so water quality and fertilizer buildup are worth considering if that becomes a repeated pattern.

Read the leaves, but remember that movement alone isn’t a distress signal. Leaves lifting, lowering and changing position between day and night are normal. Leaves repeatedly curling and remaining curled, crispy margins or foliage losing firmness are reasons to check the root zone, temperature, airflow and overall environment rather than assuming one cause. Faded or washed-looking foliage can also be a reason to investigate whether the plant is receiving more light than it needs.

Success looks like leaves that continue unfurling with strong pattern and color, active growth spreading outward from the plant and foliage that regularly moves through its normal day-and-night rhythm. Older leaves will eventually age, and an occasional imperfect edge doesn’t mean the entire plant is unhappy. Watch the direction of the newest growth. When new leaves continue emerging full-sized, well-patterned and substantial, the plant is moving in the right direction.
