Penis cactus is a monstrose form of Trichocereus bridgesii recognized for its unusual column segments that grow in short rounded clusters rather than tall straight stems. The plant develops thick knobby green growth that forms irregular finger like shapes which gives the cactus its well known common name. This mutation interrupts the normal vertical ribbed growth of the species creating a compact sculptural appearance that makes the plant highly sought after by collectors of unusual cacti.

The species originates from arid regions of Bolivia in South America where Trichocereus bridgesii grows in dry rocky soils and exposed desert landscapes. In nature the standard species forms tall ribbed columns that can reach several feet in height while storing water within its thick tissue to survive long dry periods. The monstrose form grown in cultivation maintains the same drought tolerant adaptations but develops dense clusters of irregular stems due to the genetic growth mutation.

Penis cactus grows best near south facing windows positioned about one to two feet from the glass where the plant receives strong daily sun. West facing windows can also support healthy growth when the plant sits about one to three feet from the glass allowing the stems to receive several hours of direct light. A fast draining cactus soil containing sand pumice or perlite helps keep the roots dry and watering should occur only when a chopstick inserted into the soil comes out completely dry or when a moisture meter reads around one. Soft stems yellowing tissue or collapse at the base signal the plant is receiving too much water while thin stretched growth indicates the cactus is not receiving enough light.
