The Crocodile Fern (Microsorum musifolium) is a striking tropical fern named for the unique crocodile-skin pattern on its leaves, featuring raised, reptile-like veining. This species originates from the rainforests of Southeast Asia and Australia, where it grows as an epiphytic or terrestrial plant in warm, humid environments. Because it naturally thrives on shaded forest floors and tree trunks, it prefers gentle light conditions rather than intense, direct sun.

For the best results indoors, place your Crocodile Fern where it receives bright to moderate indirect light, such as near an east- or north-facing window. East light provides soft morning sun that’s safe for its delicate fronds, while north light offers consistently cool, diffuse light similar to its natural habitat. If you only have south- or west-facing windows, position the fern several feet away or behind a sheer curtain to avoid leaf burn from strong afternoon sunlight.

Proper light direction helps maintain the plant’s signature texture and keeps the fronds from becoming pale, limp, or scorched. Rotate the pot every few weeks so the foliage grows evenly and doesn’t lean toward the brightest side. With steady humidity, warm temperatures, and indirect light from the right direction, the Crocodile Fern will stay full, vibrant, and beautifully textured.
