Corn cob cactus is a column forming euphorbia native to dry regions of South Africa where it grows in strong open sun and very fast draining soils. Indoors it requires the brightest light available to maintain compact upright growth. Place it in a south facing window within 0 to 1 feet of the glass where it can receive several hours of direct sun each day. A west window within 1 to 2 feet can also support healthy growth. If natural light is limited the plant can sit directly under a strong grow light positioned 8 to 12 inches above the plant for 10 to 12 hours daily.

This plant prefers extremely fast draining soil that allows oxygen to reach the roots. A cactus mix blended with pumice perlite and coarse sand works well so moisture moves through the pot quickly. Use a chopstick or water meter to confirm the root zone is completely dry before watering again. When watering soak the soil fully then allow it to dry completely before the next watering cycle.

The plant gives very clear visual signals when something is off. Wrinkling or slight shrinking of the stem indicates the plant has remained dry too long and is ready for water. Yellowing tissue soft areas or darkening near the base usually signal excess moisture or slow draining soil around the roots. If the stem begins to grow taller with wider spacing between the bumps the plant is searching for more light and should be moved closer to a stronger light source.
