Anthurium Clarinervium
This species is found in Mexico. One look at the large, thick, heart-shaped leaves of anthurium clarinervium with their striking patterns on their leaves and you'll know immediately why it is a popular houseplant.
Native to Mexico, this tropical plant is an epiphyte that grows on trees or other plants. As a houseplant, however, it is planted in a porous potting mix similar to orchids.
The prominent veins on its leaves are ivory or light green and wide, not unlike the pattern of corrugated cardboard, which gives the plant its common name, velvet cardboard anthurium. The flowers are inconspicuous; this plant is grown for its foliage.
Anthurium clarinervium has a moderate growth rate and takes several years to reach its mature size. These plants are toxic to humans and pets
- Place the plant in a location with bright indirect light. East, South or West light.
- Plant it in a well-draining, porous, and gritty potting mix.
- Maintain warm temperatures and a high humidity level.
- Fertilize every two months during the growing season.
The soil for anthuriums clarinervium needs to be light, coarse, and with excellent drainage. You can use a potting mix for orchids. Keep the soil evenly moist at all times and never let it fully dry out. Water slowly and deeply until water runs out of the drainage holes and only water again when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
Maintaining the proper temperatures and humidity levels is key to successfully growing anthurium clarinervium.
This tropical plant thrives in temperatures between 70 and 90°F during the spring and summer and slightly cooler temperatures in the winter, but never lower than 60°F.
High humidity of at least 50 to 60% is equally important. To keep humidity levels high during the winter months when indoor air is especially dry, you may find it necessary to run a humidifier. Place the plant in a room of your home where the humidity is naturally higher, such as a bathroom with adequate light or the kitchen.
Anthurium clarinervium does not need a lot of fertilizer. Apply an all-purpose houseplant fertilizer every two months during the growing season in spring and summer.

Let customers speak for us
from 447 reviewsI was surprised with a text from Mel, letting me know my options for selecting my first plant and asking my input about what plant I wanted. I was able to text back what I thought and just a couple days later, a beautiful black velvet Alocasia arrived, thoughtfully wrapped, all snug with a warming pouch. What a fun idea and well executed. I certainly look forward to next month! Thanks for being so informative, as well.
I purchased two varieties of synonyms from the shop. They arrived well-packed and literally not one blemish! It was shocking in the best way. Highly recommend this shop!
I am not one to respond to many emails or surveys but this book resonated with me in a special way today.
Long story short we have been thru a lot of trauma in the last 5 years. Loss in a hurricane, cancer and other surgeries between my husband and I.
A little personal, but relevant, we got in a tiff today because of how many plants I have acquired. I needed his help because I had surgery on Weds. Admittedly I have spent a lot on plants in the last 2 years but your book rang so true for me when you explained how plants support is by creating a calming environment. That whole paragraph spoke volumes to me as to why they are so important to me and my healing journey. Yes I most likely need to slow down in my purchases but even when it’s a chore to water and care for them by the time I am finished there is so much joy and accomplishment. Thank you for helping me make that connection. It helped me in a moment when I needed that clarity and how they impact my every day life.
This book is very well written and the illustration is stunning. I can’t wait to get the next volume! So much appreciated. Thank you
