Stromanthe thalia, commonly known as Stromanthe 'Triostar' or Stromanthe sanguinea, is a dazzling tropical plant celebrated for its striking variegated foliage. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, it features long, lance-shaped leaves with a painterly mix of cream, green, and rosy-pink on top—and rich burgundy undersides. A member of the Marantaceae family (alongside calatheas and ctenanthe), Stromanthe is as much a piece of living art as it is a houseplant. Its vivid coloration makes it a favorite for brightening indoor jungles and shady corners alike.

In the home, Stromanthe prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaf colors to fade or the edges to burn, while too little light can dull its vibrant variegation. An east-facing window or filtered southern light is ideal. Stromanthe loves high humidity—ideally 60% or higher—and consistently warm temperatures above 65°F. Like its prayer plant cousins, its leaves move in response to light throughout the day, folding slightly upward at night in a graceful display.

For care, keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and use filtered or distilled water to avoid brown tips (this plant is sensitive to minerals and chlorine). A well-draining mix with peat or coco coir and perlite works well. Feed once a month during spring and summer with a gentle, balanced fertilizer. With proper care—stable moisture, soft light, and high humidity—your Stromanthe 'Triostar' will grow into a lush, colorful showpiece that brings tropical charm year-round.
