The Variegated Jade Plant (Crassula ovata ‘Variegata’) is a beautiful variation of the classic jade plant, prized for its fleshy, oval-shaped leaves streaked with creamy white, pale yellow, or even hints of pink along the edges. Native to South Africa and Mozambique, jade plants are known for their longevity and ease of care, often passed down through generations as symbols of luck, prosperity, and friendship. The variegated form adds extra ornamental value, making it stand out in any collection with its striking foliage patterns and compact growth habit.

Light is especially important for maintaining strong color in a variegated jade. This succulent thrives in bright, direct to bright, indirect light, ideally in a south- or west-facing window if kept indoors. Too little light can cause the variegation to fade and the plant to grow leggy, while ample light encourages compact growth and even brings out pink tones along the leaf edges. Outdoors, it should be placed where it can receive plenty of sun but be slowly acclimated to prevent scorching. Rotating the plant every couple of weeks helps it grow evenly on all sides.

Like other succulents, the variegated jade prefers well-draining soil and infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings, then soak deeply to encourage strong root development. Overwatering is the most common mistake and can lead to root rot, so it’s better to err on the side of too dry rather than too wet. During spring and summer, a diluted balanced fertilizer can be applied once a month to support healthy growth. With the right balance of light, water, and patience, a variegated jade can live for decades, becoming not only a striking display plant but also a meaningful heirloom.
