Sansevieria, or Snake Plants, are beloved for their striking upright leaves, incredible durability, and air-purifying abilities. These plants come in many varieties—such as the popular Laurentii, Moonshine, Whale Fin, and Bird’s Nest types—and are native to arid regions of West Africa. Their stiff, sword-like leaves can be green, striped, or even variegated with yellow or white. Snake plants are some of the easiest houseplants to care for, making them perfect for beginners or low-maintenance households.

Light needs: Sansevierias are highly adaptable. They thrive in bright, indirect light but can also handle low light or partial sun, making them great for spots like north-, east-, or even low-lit west-facing rooms. While they tolerate low light, they’ll grow faster and with more vivid coloring in brighter areas. Just avoid direct, harsh sun, especially for variegated types, as it can scorch the leaves.

Watering and soil: As drought-tolerant succulents, snake plants prefer to dry out completely between waterings. Water roughly every 3-4 weeks depending on light and temperature. Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, and make sure the pot has drainage holes. Overwatering is the most common killer—yellow, mushy leaves are a sign to cut back. These plants enjoy average indoor humidity and don’t need misting. With the right conditions, Sansevierias are hardy, sculptural additions to any room and require very little attention to thrive.
