Philodendron pastazanum is a stunning terrestrial philodendron prized for its large, heart-shaped leaves that feature deep veins and a glossy surface. Unlike many other philodendrons that climb, this species grows horizontally along the ground, making it a standout in aroid collections. Native to Ecuador and parts of South America, it thrives in tropical forest environments, preferring warmth, moisture, and consistent care. Given space and proper conditions, its leaves can grow impressively large, creating a dramatic, architectural effect.

In terms of lighting, Philodendron pastazanum thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate lower light levels, insufficient light can result in smaller leaves and slower growth. Avoid placing it in direct sun, as its broad leaves are sensitive and can easily burn. Ideal locations include spots near east-facing windows or rooms with diffused, filtered light. If you're growing it under grow lights, 10–12 hours of moderate intensity light per day usually supports healthy development.

Caring for Philodendron pastazanum involves maintaining even moisture without letting the roots sit in water. Use a chunky, well-draining substrate like a mix of orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir to keep roots aerated. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry, and boost humidity whenever possible—this species prefers humidity levels above 60%. Regular fertilization during spring and summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer helps fuel leaf growth. With patience and attention, Philodendron pastazanum becomes a striking foliage centerpiece.
