The Ric Rac Cactus, also known as Epiphyllum anguliger or the Fishbone Cactus, is a tropical epiphytic cactus loved for its wavy, zig-zagging stems that resemble the bones of a fish. Native to the rainforests of Mexico, this cactus grows naturally on tree trunks, where it enjoys dappled sunlight and high humidity. Indoors, it thrives in bright, indirect light, such as near a north- or east-facing window, or set a few feet back from a south/west window with filtered light.

Despite its bold look, the Ric Rac Cactus is relatively low-maintenance. It prefers a chunky, well-draining mix (like orchid bark with perlite and coco coir) and appreciates regular watering when the top inch of soil dries out. Unlike desert cacti, it doesn’t like to fully dry out for long periods. This plant also benefits from moderate humidity and occasional misting. In the right conditions, mature plants may reward you with fragrant, night-blooming flowers in late summer or early fall.

Perfect for hanging baskets, shelves, or climbing supports, the Ric Rac Cactus adds a dramatic, tropical feel to any space. Its sculptural stems spill over pots like living artwork, making it a favorite among collectors and casual plant lovers alike. With its eye-catching form and easygoing nature, it’s a standout addition to any indoor jungle.
