The lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus radicans) is a tropical beauty native to Southeast Asia, loved for its cascading vines and vibrant, tube-shaped blooms that resemble a tube of lipstick peeking out of its case. With glossy green leaves and striking red flowers, it’s a favorite choice for hanging baskets or high shelves where its trailing growth can shine. When given the right conditions, it becomes a stunning statement piece that adds a bold pop of color to any indoor plant collection.

To thrive, lipstick plants need bright, indirect light. Place them near an east- or west-facing window where they’ll get plenty of natural brightness without harsh, direct sun that can scorch the leaves. A south-facing window works as well, provided there’s a sheer curtain to filter the light. They also appreciate a warm, humid environment, similar to their tropical origins, so bathrooms with windows or rooms with a humidifier are excellent spots for them.

Caring for a lipstick plant is fairly straightforward. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering, making sure not to let the plant sit in waterlogged soil, as that can lead to root rot. Fertilize every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer to encourage lush foliage and more frequent blooms. With the right light, consistent moisture, and a touch of humidity, your lipstick plant will reward you with vibrant flowers and healthy trailing vines throughout the year.
