Calla lilies are elegant, trumpet-shaped flowers native to southern Africa, admired worldwide for their striking beauty and symbolic grace. Despite their name, they are not true lilies but belong to the Araceae family. Calla lilies feature smooth, arrow shaped leaves and bloom in a wide range of colors from classic white to vibrant shades of pink, yellow, orange, and deep purple. Their sculptural form and long-lasting nature make them a favorite choice for weddings, floral arrangements, and ornamental gardens.

These plants thrive in warm, sunny environments with rich, well-draining soil and consistent moisture. In the garden, calla lilies typically bloom from late spring through mid-summer, depending on the climate. When grown indoors or in containers, they can be coaxed to flower at other times of the year with the right light and temperature conditions. Regular feeding and adequate watering during their growth phase help ensure strong stems and large, colorful blooms.

After flowering, calla lilies naturally enter a period of dormancy, during which the leaves yellow and die back. This phase allows the rhizomes to rest and store energy for the next growing season. In colder regions, the rhizomes can be dug up, dried, and stored in a cool, dry place until spring. With proper care and attention, calla lilies will return year after year, bringing a touch of sophistication and timeless beauty to any garden or home.

To keep calla lily blooms lasting longer in your home, it’s important to recreate their ideal growing conditions as closely as possible. Place the plant in bright, indirect light, such as near an east- or south-facing window, and maintain a moderate temperature around 65–75°F. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, as overwatering can lead to root rot and shorten the life of the flowers. Regularly remove any wilted blooms or yellowing leaves to encourage continued flowering and prevent disease. For cut calla lilies in a vase, change the water every few days, trim the stems at an angle, and keep them away from direct sunlight, drafts, and ripening fruit, which can release ethylene gas that hastens wilting. With these simple care steps, the elegant blooms can stay vibrant and fresh for up to two weeks or more indoors.
