Calathea medallion is a stunning tropical houseplant known for its bold, round leaves patterned with deep green, silvery markings on top and rich purple undersides. Native to the rainforests of South America, this plant is a standout in any indoor jungle and is part of the prayer plant family (Marantaceae), meaning its leaves move in response to light—rising at night and spreading out during the day. Its dramatic foliage and gentle movements make it a favorite for plant lovers who enjoy interactive, decorative plants.

To keep your Calathea medallion happy, place it in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade or scorch the leaves. This plant can also tolerate medium light conditions but may grow more slowly. An east-facing window or a few feet away from a bright south- or west-facing window works beautifully. Consistent light encourages vibrant colors and healthy leaf movement.

This Calathea thrives in high humidity and well-draining soil. Water it when soil is dry, using filtered or distilled water to prevent browning leaf edges (which can happen with hard tap water). Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Mist regularly or use a humidity tray or humidifier, especially during the dry winter months.
