Caladiums are tropical foliage plants native to the warm, humid regions of South America, especially Brazil. They thrive in rainforest understories where filtered sunlight and high humidity dominate, which makes them well-suited for indoor environments that can mimic those conditions. Known for their vibrant, heart-shaped leaves in shades of pink, red, white, and green, Caladiums are grown primarily for their ornamental value rather than flowers.

To care for Caladiums indoors, place them in a spot with bright, indirect light—an east- or north-facing window is ideal. Direct sunlight can burn their delicate leaves, so filtered light through a sheer curtain works best. Keep the temperature consistently between 65–85°F (18–29°C) and maintain high humidity by misting the plant, using a humidifier, or placing the pot on a tray with water and pebbles. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, ensuring the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot, and feed the plant every few weeks during the growing season with a diluted balanced fertilizer.

Caladiums typically go dormant in cooler months, with leaves yellowing and dying back. When this happens, reduce watering and let the soil dry out. If the foliage dies off completely, the tubers can be stored in a cool, dry place until spring. When warmth returns, resume watering and the plant will begin growing again. With proper care, Caladiums make striking houseplants that can bring tropical color indoors year after year.
