Balfour Aralia (Polyscias balfouriana) is a striking tropical plant known for its round, leathery leaves that often resemble coins. Native to the Pacific Islands, it’s popular as a decorative indoor plant thanks to its bold, architectural look. In the right conditions, it can grow into a tall, tree-like statement piece, making it perfect for filling corners or adding a lush backdrop to a plant collection.

This plant thrives best in a bright east- or west-facing window, where it can receive strong but indirect sunlight. A few feet back from a south-facing window also works well, as long as it’s protected from harsh, direct rays that may scorch its leaves. Too little light can cause leggy growth, while too much direct sun may damage the foliage. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy, and boost humidity with misting, grouping, or a humidifier.

Balfour Aralia also enjoys a bit of stability; moving it too often or exposing it to drafts can lead to leaf drop. Fertilize monthly during the spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertilizer to encourage strong growth. With steady care and the right light direction, this plant matures into a dramatic, tree-like specimen that brings elegance and structure to any indoor space.
