String of Dolphins (Senecio peregrinus), a unique and beautiful succulent, is fairly easy as long as you provide the right conditions. Here's a guide to help you take care of your plant:
Light
- Bright, indirect light is best for your String of Dolphins. It thrives in bright conditions but not in direct sunlight, which could scorch its leaves. A spot near a window with filtered light works well.
- Avoid low-light areas as this can cause the plant to become leggy and less vibrant.
Watering
- Water sparingly. Like most succulents, String of Dolphins is susceptible to root rot, so allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
- During the growing season (spring and summer), water about once every 2 weeks, depending on how dry the soil is.
- In the winter, when the plant is dormant, water less frequently.
Soil
- Use a well-draining succulent mix or make your own by adding sand or perlite to regular potting soil. This helps prevent water retention and root rot.
Temperature
- This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 60-85°F. It can handle a bit of heat, but make sure it’s not exposed to temperatures below 50°F for too long.
Humidity
- String of Dolphins doesn’t need high humidity. Average household humidity is perfect for it.
Potting and Repotting
- Make sure the pot has a drainage hole to prevent water from pooling at the bottom.
- Repot every 1-2 years, or when it becomes root-bound. When repotting, ensure the new pot isn’t too much larger than the previous one, as this can cause the plant to focus on root growth instead of top growth.
Fertilizing
- You can fertilize your String of Dolphins during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer about once a month.
- Avoid fertilizing in winter when the plant is dormant.
Pruning
- If the plant becomes too long or leggy, trim it back using clean scissors or pruning shears. This will encourage new growth and maintain the plant's shape.
Pests
- While String of Dolphins is fairly resistant to pests, keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. If you notice any pests, gently wash them off with water or use an insecticidal soap.

Received my stunning alocasia in just a few days and she’s adjusting nicely! I opted in for the safe weather shipping and it was packed well. I’ll definitely order from the rooted plant shop again. All because my TIK tok page told me to use 70% alcohol (which is a collection saving trick!)!!

Awesome plant , arrived very healthy and happy.
I love how my plants were so well packaged and arrived undamaged
I've had a lot of plants in my life, but this is probably the most unusual I've tried! I've also had quite a few real stones in my life as I grew up in a small family-owned gravel pit business! Melanie is so easy to work with, it is pleasure supporting her business.
