Alocasia ‘Mandalay’ is a striking tropical plant originally native to the warm, humid rainforests of Southeast Asia, where many Alocasia species naturally grow under tall forest canopies. In its native habitat, it receives bright but filtered light, which helps it develop its deep green leaves with contrasting pale veins. This dappled lighting environment is key to understanding how it should be placed indoors.

When grown as a houseplant, Alocasia ‘Mandalay’ thrives in bright, indirect light coming from an east- or north-facing window. Too much direct afternoon sun can scorch its leaves, while too little light may reduce its bold variegation and cause the plant to stretch. Positioning it so it receives gentle morning light or strong but diffused daylight will help maintain its structure and color.

Rotate the pot every week so all sides receive equal exposure to light, preventing lopsided growth. If natural light is limited, a full-spectrum grow light placed at an angle above the plant can mimic the soft overhead light it receives in nature. Consistent, indirect illumination will keep your Alocasia ‘Mandalay’ vibrant and healthy.
