Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Rhipsalis, native to tropical regions of Central and South America, is an epiphytic cactus known for its thin, trailing stems that can be round, flat, or slightly angular depending on the species. Unlike desert cacti, it has a softer, more flowing look that works well in hanging planters or elevated shelves where the stems can drape naturally. Its fine texture and movement give it a more delicate, jungle-like feel.

Light should be bright but indirect. Place it in an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west-facing window where it gets steady light without direct sun hitting the stems. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K at 300–700 foot-candles. Too much direct sun can cause the stems to yellow or develop a stressed, faded look, while too little light will slow growth and make the plant thinner and less full.

Watering should be more frequent than desert cacti but still controlled. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy while holding some moisture. If the stems begin to wrinkle and lose their round shape, it needs more consistent moisture. If the base becomes soft or discolored, it’s staying too wet. Thinner, elongated growth with more spacing between segments points to not enough light rather than watering.
