Epipremnum aureum ‘Jade’, commonly called jade pothos, is a tropical climbing aroid native to Southeast Asia prized for its rich, solid green, heart-shaped leaves and vigorous growth. Unlike golden pothos, jade pothos does not produce variegation, giving it a deep emerald appearance that creates a lush, full display. Its ability to thrive in a wide range of indoor conditions makes it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced collectors.
Light plays a major role in leaf size and growth rate. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives bright, consistent light, though it will also tolerate lower light better than most variegated pothos. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 8–12 inches above the canopy. In lower light, growth slows, the spacing between leaves increases, and new leaves remain smaller. Strong, even light encourages faster growth, fuller vines, and larger foliage, especially when allowed to climb a moss pole or plank.
Allow the soil to dry about halfway between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. A well-draining mix of succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite provides the airflow the roots need while still retaining enough moisture for steady growth. If leaves begin to curl or the vines lose firmness while the soil is dry, it’s time to water. Yellowing leaves while the soil remains wet indicate the roots are staying too saturated, while consistently small new leaves are usually a sign the plant needs more light or vertical support rather than additional fertilizer.
One of the biggest differences between jade pothos and golden pothos is coloration and light tolerance. Jade pothos has solid green leaves with no variegation, allowing it to photosynthesize more efficiently and tolerate lower light conditions. Golden pothos develops yellow variegation that requires brighter light to stay vibrant. Both plants produce much larger, more mature leaves when grown vertically instead of trailing.
