Philodendron ‘Xanadu’ is a tropical aroid native to Brazil, valued for its dense, mounding growth habit and deeply lobed, glossy green leaves. Unlike climbing philodendrons, Xanadu grows as a self-heading plant, forming a full, compact clump without needing a moss pole or support. What makes this plant special is its ability to create a lush, tropical appearance while remaining relatively compact and easy to maintain indoors.
Light plays a major role in producing full, symmetrical growth. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives bright, consistent light without prolonged harsh afternoon sun. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 10–14 inches above the canopy. In lower light, growth slows, the plant becomes more open, and new leaves develop with less pronounced lobes. Strong, even light encourages larger, deeply divided leaves and a fuller overall shape.
Allow the soil to dry about halfway between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. A well-draining mix of succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite provides the airflow the roots need while holding enough moisture for healthy growth. If the leaves begin to droop while the soil is dry, it’s ready for water. Yellowing lower leaves while the soil remains wet indicate the roots are staying too saturated. Smaller new leaves are typically a sign the plant needs more light or has become rootbound rather than needing additional fertilizer.
Because Xanadu is a self-heading philodendron, its growth naturally becomes wider instead of producing long vines. New leaves emerge tightly rolled from the center of the plant and gradually develop deeper lobes as the plant matures. If the center becomes crowded or new leaves struggle to unfurl, improving light, airflow, and maintaining consistent moisture usually resolves the issue.

from 816 reviewsBeautiful plant! Very well packaged and timely shipping!
The plant arrived in perfect condition and is beautiful. I love it!
Despite the “beginner” name, I’d say it’s genuinely useful at any experience level. It starts with a solid foundation for those just getting into houseplants, but the depth of the later guides means it doesn’t feel like it’s talking down to anyone with more experience. It’s less about basic care instructions and more about building a real understanding of how plants function, which is useful whether you’re keeping your first pothos alive or managing a larger, more varied collection.
What sets it apart is the emphasis on understanding why plants behave the way they do, not just prescribing one-size-fits-all care instructions. This approach makes it easier to recognize early warning signs and address issues before they become serious problems.
Overall, I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a more thorough, connected understanding of plant care rather than piecemeal advice — regardless of how long you’ve been growing.
Wonderful shop to purchase from! I am
Learning so much and am thoroughly enjoying the beginners plant guide series. The pest guide helped me successfully defeat fungus gnats and taught me to transition to bottom watering. Thanks Mel!!
