Philodendron ‘Choco Empress’ is a rare climbing hybrid prized for its large, velvety foliage and rich chocolate-bronze tones on emerging leaves. As the foliage matures, the leaves deepen to dark green while retaining a soft, velvety texture and prominent veining. Like many climbing philodendrons, it develops larger, more mature leaves when provided with vertical support such as a moss pole. Its dramatic foliage, vigorous growth, and uncommon availability have made it a favorite among aroid collectors.
Place Philodendron ‘Choco Empress’ within 1–3 feet of an east-facing or south-facing window. Bright light encourages larger leaves, stronger coloration, and compact growth. Under grow lights, use a full-spectrum bulb in the 5000K–6500K range. High-output lights should be positioned 8–12 inches above the foliage, while medium-strength lights work best at 10–14 inches. Avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun, which can damage the velvety leaves, while lower light often results in smaller foliage and longer spaces between nodes.
Water when the root zone is approaching dryness, never on a schedule. Use a chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot to determine when the roots are ready for water. Plant in a chunky mix of equal parts succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite to provide excellent drainage and airflow around the roots. Philodendron ‘Choco Empress’ prefers evenly available moisture but should never remain in saturated soil. A moss pole or other climbing support encourages stronger root attachment, larger leaves, and more mature growth.
Philodendron ‘Choco Empress’ communicates through its foliage and climbing habit. Healthy plants produce progressively larger leaves with rich bronze new growth that gradually matures to deep green. If new leaves become noticeably smaller or the spaces between nodes increase, the plant is asking for more light or additional climbing support. Leaves that lose firmness or begin to droop while the root zone is dry are signaling it is ready for water, while yellowing leaves accompanied by consistently wet soil may indicate the roots are remaining too moist. As the plant matures and climbs, increasing leaf size, thicker stems, and more pronounced venation are strong indicators that it is thriving.
