Philodendron ‘Burle Marx Variegated’ is a rare, highly sought-after plant known for its elongated, slightly wavy leaves marked with bold white to cream variegation. The pattern can range from marbling to sectoral blocks, creating strong contrast against the deep green base. It grows in a more compact, bushy form compared to climbing philodendrons, making it full and structured without needing support.
Light helps maintain balanced growth and stable variegation. Place it in an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K at 600–1000 foot-candles. Too little light can lead to more green-heavy leaves over time, while too much direct sun can burn the lighter variegated sections.
Watering should stay consistent but not heavy. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep the roots airy. If new leaves are emerging smaller with less defined variegation and the plant becomes denser but slower growing, that points to not enough light. If variegated sections develop dry, brown patches while the rest of the leaf stays firm, that is light or moisture stress affecting the lighter tissue, not a disease.

The plant arrived in perfect condition and is beautiful. I love it!
Despite the “beginner” name, I’d say it’s genuinely useful at any experience level. It starts with a solid foundation for those just getting into houseplants, but the depth of the later guides means it doesn’t feel like it’s talking down to anyone with more experience. It’s less about basic care instructions and more about building a real understanding of how plants function, which is useful whether you’re keeping your first pothos alive or managing a larger, more varied collection.
What sets it apart is the emphasis on understanding why plants behave the way they do, not just prescribing one-size-fits-all care instructions. This approach makes it easier to recognize early warning signs and address issues before they become serious problems.
Overall, I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a more thorough, connected understanding of plant care rather than piecemeal advice — regardless of how long you’ve been growing.
Wonderful shop to purchase from! I am
Learning so much and am thoroughly enjoying the beginners plant guide series. The pest guide helped me successfully defeat fungus gnats and taught me to transition to bottom watering. Thanks Mel!!
