Philodendron hederaceum ‘Neon’, commonly called neon heart leaf, is a trailing philodendron native to Central and South America known for its bright chartreuse, heart-shaped leaves that grow along flexible vines. What makes this plant special is its consistent neon coloration—each leaf emerges vibrant and glowing, creating a soft, cascading look that stands out even in lower-light spaces.
Light drives both color intensity and vine density. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the neon tone dulls slightly and the vines stretch with more space between leaves. Strong, even light keeps the color brighter and the growth tighter.
Watering should stay balanced and consistent. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant shows thirst through slight leaf curl while staying soft and flexible. If leaves yellow and drop from the vine while the soil is wet, the roots are staying too saturated. If vines become long and sparse, it’s reacting to light, not watering.

The plant arrived in perfect condition and is beautiful. I love it!
Despite the “beginner” name, I’d say it’s genuinely useful at any experience level. It starts with a solid foundation for those just getting into houseplants, but the depth of the later guides means it doesn’t feel like it’s talking down to anyone with more experience. It’s less about basic care instructions and more about building a real understanding of how plants function, which is useful whether you’re keeping your first pothos alive or managing a larger, more varied collection.
What sets it apart is the emphasis on understanding why plants behave the way they do, not just prescribing one-size-fits-all care instructions. This approach makes it easier to recognize early warning signs and address issues before they become serious problems.
Overall, I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a more thorough, connected understanding of plant care rather than piecemeal advice — regardless of how long you’ve been growing.
Wonderful shop to purchase from! I am
Learning so much and am thoroughly enjoying the beginners plant guide series. The pest guide helped me successfully defeat fungus gnats and taught me to transition to bottom watering. Thanks Mel!!
