Monstera deliciosa is native to the tropical forests of Central America and is known for its large, split leaves called fenestrations that develop as the plant matures and climbs. These openings help the plant handle light and wind in its natural environment. What makes this plant highly desirable is its bold, architectural presence and the dramatic leaf size it can reach when given proper support like a moss pole. Without support, it stays smaller and less defined.
Place this plant in a south or west-facing window about 3–6 feet from the glass, or an east-facing window 1–3 feet away. Strong, consistent light is what drives larger leaves and deeper fenestrations. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 8–12 inches above the canopy. If new leaves are smaller or not splitting, it needs more light. If leaves show bleaching or dry patches, the light may be too intense.
Water using a chopstick or meter and let the soil dry about halfway to almost fully before watering again depending on your environment. This plant prefers a chunky, well-draining mix and does not tolerate staying wet. Yellowing leaves and soft stems indicate overwatering, while drooping and curling point to underwatering. Aerial roots are normal and can be directed into the soil or onto a support to help the plant climb and stabilize.
