Monstera decursiva is a tropical climbing plant native to Southeast Asia and India. Unlike the more common Monstera deliciosa, this species has long, deeply lobed leaves that develop a dramatic, fenestrated appearance as the plant matures. In its natural habitat, Monstera decursiva climbs trees in dense rainforests, using aerial roots to attach itself to surfaces. When grown indoors, it makes a bold statement with its unique foliage and trailing or climbing growth habit.

To care for Monstera decursiva, provide well-draining soil that retains some moisture but doesn’t stay soggy—an aroid mix with peat, perlite, and orchid bark works well. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry, and reduce watering in the winter months. Like other monsteras, it appreciates high humidity and warm temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). If humidity is low, mist the plant occasionally or use a humidifier to prevent browning leaf edges. Fertilize once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer to support healthy growth.

For lighting, Monstera decursiva thrives in bright, indirect light. It does well near an east- or west-facing window, where it receives filtered sunlight without the risk of leaf scorch. In a south-facing room, it should be placed a few feet from the window or behind sheer curtains to diffuse the intensity. Too little light, such as in a north-facing space, can slow growth and cause smaller, less dramatic leaves. Providing a moss pole or trellis will also help support its natural climbing behavior indoors.
