Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Pteris ensiformis ‘Victoriae’, commonly called Golden Zebra Bamboo Fern or Silver Lace Fern, is a tropical fern grown for its striped, variegated fronds. Native to Southeast Asia, it grows in warm, humid forest floors with filtered light. What makes this plant special is the contrast between creamy white to pale yellow centers and green margins, creating a “zebra” stripe effect across narrow, pointed fronds. The foliage is light, airy, and upright with a slightly arching habit, giving it a soft, layered look.

Light requirements
Place Pteris ensiformis ‘Victoriae’ in an east or north window for the best balance, positioned at the window or within 1 to 3 feet depending on intensity. A south or west window can work if pulled back to avoid direct sun hitting the fronds. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and keep the light 12 to 18 inches above the canopy. It performs best around 100 to 300 foot-candles. Too much direct light will scorch the variegation, while too little light will reduce contrast and slow growth.

Watering & environment
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, never fully dry and never saturated. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. This fern prefers higher humidity, steady airflow, and cooler to moderate indoor temperatures. Avoid letting it dry out, as it does not recover well from drought stress.

What your plant is telling you
If fronds crisp or brown at the edges, it is drying out or humidity is too low. If fronds yellow or become limp, the soil is staying too wet. If the variegation fades or growth becomes sparse, it needs more consistent light.
